Happyend

In a future Tokyo facing the threat of a major earthquake, government controls are tightening. Two high-school friends share a love of electronic music, but growing surveillance and their emerging political awareness put their friendship under strain. Adults present monitoring as protection; the teenagers experience it as confinement.

This debut fiction feature, written and directed by its filmmaker, uses a dystopian setting to explore social tensions in contemporary Japan, including the dangers of right-wing government and nationalism.
