Trial of Hein

After fourteen years away, a man returns to his home village on a small German island in the North Sea. His mother has dementia, and his younger sister barely remembers him. When his recollections of village life clash with those of the residents, they question his identity and put him on trial to prove who he is.

Drama

The screenplay uses an archaic German dialect rather than contemporary speech to give the film a theatrical quality instead of a realist tone.
